We are Henning Larsen.

As an experienced studio with a global presence, a balance of hands-on capabilities and artistic sensitivity is at the core of our design language. With it is an unending call for adaptability and responsiveness. We are redefining beauty by the lasting impact of our designs.

Founded in 1959 by Danish architect Henning Larsen – whose legacy of creativity and learning we carry today – we navigate the complex connections that bind together our built environment, ecological systems, and societies at large.

Working across architecture, landscape, urban design and interiors, we maintain acute attention to detail whilst never losing sight of the bigger picture. It is this that enables us to manifest lasting change as we co-create, innovate, and cultivate desirable futures through design.

With more than 600 employees, our design community is spread across studios in eight countries.

The master of light

Growing up in Western Jutland, Henning Larsen was enchanted by light; absorbed by the ways it could fill a village church, flood through a skylight in a farmhouse, and reflect off of whitewashed bricks. Light experiences left immense impressions on him and formed the basis of his later work – a masterful blend of direct and reflected daylight. In 1959, Henning founded his own architectural practice, where he was a driving force for more than 50 years. Throughout his career, he returned time and again to the strength of daylight.

Henning passed in 2013, and today we remain proud to bear his name. His inquisitive, agile, and experiential approach to architecture and his ability to push boundaries remain cornerstones of our practice.

Jens Lindhe, 1996
The architecture of Henning Larsen was characterized by his ability to manipulate daylight; he treated daylight as a material like any other. This was the reason Henning Larsen became known in the architectural community as 'the master of light'.

The Henning Larsen Foundation

A non-profit established in 2001, the Henning Larsen Foundation was founded with the aim of advancing the field of architecture, in a broad sense. Awarding one or more grants each year on Henning’s birthday, August 20th, the foundation has recognized a range of voices and initiatives relating to architecture; from up-and-coming practitioners, to poets, illustrators, and photographers.
