      Topping-Out Ceremony in Viborg

Last week the municipality of Viborg held a topping-out ceremony for the new Viborg Town Hall, which will consolidate about 800 employees under one roof.

    • Henning Larsen has designed the new Viborg Town Hall as “a town in the town” – a symbol of the sense of community that emerged from the municipal merger.

The 19,000 m2 building is situated on a former barracks plot outside the historic centre of Viborg. From August 2011, this will be the place where citizens will meet the official Viborg.

Flexibility has been a key aspect in the design of the building, which features open offices combined with meeting rooms, conference rooms and flex rooms. The ground floor comprises the public, outward functions while an inner, almost floating staircase and the significant atrium stairs connect the six floors comprising offices and administration. The heart of the building is the large, inner atrium, which supports the professional community of the Town Hall as well as the contact with the citizens.

At the topping-out ceremony, Frank Mikkelsen, chief of staff in Viborg, said: “The architect has succeeded in creating a work of art whose aesthetics reflect the values of a modern administration building. […] It will be a very open building indeed.”

From the roof of the building and down through the open atrium, the daylight pours in on the floors. The cafeteria on the top floor has direct access to the roof terrace.

The building is characterised by a very sustainable design and features several energy-efficient solutions, including natural ventilation as well as active and passive cooling, which makes the building meet the requirements for low-energy class 1 according to Danish building regulations. In addition, solar panels have been built into the roofed parking facilities.

The building is expected to be completed in August 2011.
