      Topping-out ceremony at Moesgaard Museum

On Friday 16 March, the topping-out ceremony for the new Moesgaard Museum took place in bright sunshine. The museum is situated in the hilly landscape of Skåde Bakker south of Aarhus. It is the first cultural historical museum built from the ground up in Denmark for more than 100 years.

    • The existing Moesgaard Museum in Aarhus is situated in the more than 300-year-old manor house of Moesgaard, which will comprise research and educational facilities in the future. The new building will house the museum’s art collection as well as a selection of anthropological and archaeological research projects from Aarhus University.

With its luxuriant green roof, the new building rises as a hill in the landscape. The building adds 16,000 new square metres of exhibition space to the museum. At the moment, only the people working on site can enjoy the view of Aarhus Bay. When Moesgaard Museum opens, the visitors will also get a chance to enjoy the view and surrounding scenic landscape from the luxuriant, green roof.

Approximately a year ago, Nicolai Wammen, mayor of Aarhus at the time, cut the first sod for the expansion. The building is expected to be completed in autumn 2013 and open to the public in June 2014.

On the occasion of the topping-out ceremony, the museum had invited craftsmen, architects, technicians, museum staff and the press to celebrate this milestone on the road to realising one of the most ambitious museum projects in Denmark.
