      New Powerhouse for Life Sciences in Norway

      Henning Larsen Architects is part of a team that has been selected in the competition of a large Norwegian research and education building, Livsvitenskapsbygget, at the University of Oslo. The team includes Rambøll, NNE Pharmaplan, Arkitekturlaboratoriet, Bjørbekk & Lindheim and Erichsen & Horgen.

    • The University of Oslo is the biggest research institution within in the field of chemistry, pharmacy and molecular biosciences in Norway. The vision is to create a connected campus for interdisciplinary research and education. The project represents a central part of the realization of “Nasjonal strategi for bioteknologi 2017-20” and the establishment of a state-of-the-art powerhouse within the field of life sciences.

      The new building will contain 5.500 m2 of facilities for education, a 10.400m2 area for general research, 3.900 m2 for common infrastructure and research facilities, 4.800 m2 for common activities as well as 11.000 m2 of offices. The new building will take up a gross area of 66.700 m2.

      The building will be located in Gaustadbekkdalen in Oslo and will be an important element in the development of a collected campus area, which stretches from Blindern to Rikshospitalet and and which will be defining Gaustadbekkdalen and the Oslo region as the national main arena for research, education and knowledge sharing within the field of life sciences.  

      Seven teams have been selected for the competition, for which the round of applications was a major international draw. Norske Statsbygg chose a number of Scandinavian architectural firms and opted out of several international architectural companies.

      Henning Larsen Architects has previously worked with a number of research and education projects in Norway. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (former Trondheim University) was inaugurated in 1978. Jåttå Vocational School in Stavanger was completed in 2007. The research department of the radium hospital was inaugurated in 2009. Campus Ås, which connects the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science and the Norwegian Veterinary Institute with the already existing University of Life Sciences are amongst the current Henning Larsen Architects projects in Norway.
