      Sustainable Pilot Project for IKEA

      For long, IKEA have been frontrunners within sustainability in their products, and they are known for their use of certified textiles and wood. With assistance from the Henning Larsen Sustainability Department, IKEA Germany is now taking it a step further, building the second of two future, sustainable pilot stores with focus on environment and sustainability in the city of Kaarst.

    • The Sustainability Department at Henning Larsen is advisor on the development of sustainability strategies for the more than 35,000 m2 building, expected to open in 2016. All aspects of sustainability need to be included in the project, from economy and environment to social responsibility. As part of the sustainable solutions, the pilot project includes an internet forum, in which the citizens of Kaarst have been invited to share their ideas for, as well as opinions on, the project. About the implementation of the citizens’ suggestions, Facility Manager at IKEA Detlef Boje says;

      “We would like to compile all of these great ideas into an ideal project of sustainability. Not only the technical aspects should be playing a role – customers and employees have been placed in a central position in the project”.

      The first sustainable store will be built in Japan.
