GURU A Fusion in the Making

Located amid the urban landscape of inner Copenhagen, GURU invites its guests inside for an authentic encounter with the flavours of northern India.

    • Located amid the urban landscape of inner Copenhagen, GURU invites its guests inside for an authentic encounter with the flavours of northern India.

In developing an overall design concept for GURU, The Design Department at Henning Larsen Architects has created a fusion of cool Scandinavia and vibrant India. Clean surfaces, exclusive materials and minimalist compositions were united with a vibrant Indian colour palette, traditional ornaments and the subtle glow of copper.

“For many years, GURU has managed to establish an enchanting world of taste, service and authenticity. In concept developing, our aim was to get under the skin of this palette of expressive ingredients and unite them with the pulse of Copenhagen. The atmosphere at GURU reflects a unified space of both worlds coming together” – Christian Andresen / Manager at The Design Department.

The interior design concept includes fixed furniture, soft lighting solutions and selection of loose furniture. The kitchen, previously hidden away behind closed doors, was brought out into the restaurant and integrated into the dining experience. Now the restaurant is filled with the fragrance of baked naan bread and spices, views of traditional tandoor ovens, and the sounds of king prawns cooking—a dining experience for all the senses. Through the bar, along the low lounge seating and even extending into restrooms, elegant copper details bring warmth into the space and unify the restaurant.

To support the interior design, space planning was also carried out. By re-thinking the flow of the restaurant, work flow for the GURU staff has been optimised and customers are provided with a broader range of seating arrangements and options.

As another essential component of the assignment, The Design Department created a total visual identity, consisting of a logo, colour palette, stationery elements, food packaging, uniforms, website, restaurant façade and signage. A combination of dusty colour tones, Indian calligraphy, explosions of pink and orange, and an overall elegant, clean composition brings together the best of both worlds.

To strengthen the visual identity, a communications strategy specifying tone and outreach media was also developed. With Indian quotes and religious sayings forming the consistent element of outgoing communications, the strategy completes a cohesive identity.
