Two Projects Honored at the AIA International Region Design Awards

At the AIA IR (The International Chapter of the American Institute of Architects) Conference SDU University of Southern Denmark, Campus Kolding, and Moesgaard Museum were announced as winners of the Open International category.

    • SDU University of Southern Denmark, Campus Kolding, houses 2,900 students of communications, design, culture and languages. The building is designed so it supports flexible teaching methods and different learning situations, which are beneficial for the students’ learning process. The building’s triangular shape and its unique intelligent façade of dynamic solar shading makes the building a distinctive landmark.

Earlier this year the campus won the Green Good Design Award 2016 given by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. The campus was also honored at the Interior Awards in the beginning of the year, America’s oldest and most prestigious award for the design of interiors presented by Contract Magazine, and at American Architecture Prize it was awarded silver in the category Educational Buildings.

Moesgaard Museum in Denmark accommodates archaeological and ethnographic exhibitions, hence, the design is inspired by the process of archaeological excavation. The sloping roof of the museum is covered with grass and creates a new hill in the hilly landscape and hides the treasures underneath. The roof has become the visual landmark of the museum, an attraction and place for activities.

The award honors the building design as well as the sustainable solutions integrated in the building. The conference took place in Toronto the 21st of October.
