Waterfront Landmark Adds New Life to Historic Harbor city

The historic city of Sønderborg in Southern Jutland, Denmark is well on its way to getting a new architectural landmark.

    • Present at the topping-out ceremony yesterday for the Alsik Hotel were our collaboration partners, stakeholders, local press, and craftsmen celebrating the two elegantly connected towers of 9 and 14 storeys marking the future of the historic commercial town.

“It is with great joy we contribute to writing a new chapter in Sønderborg’s rich history. Alsik is going to open up the harbor, creating life by the water while offering unrivaled views. From an observation floor, 64 meters above sea level people will be able to see how Alssund, the slopes and landscape embrace the city of Sønderborg. As architects, it has been deeply inspiring that the vision behind the Alsik project and the larger harbor front development is infused with regional dedication and creative ambition to develop Sønderborg. The energy has been contagious and the good consistent collaboration with the Bitten & Mads Clausen’s Foundation and Asger Enggard secures that Alsik is not only going to be a remarkable landmark connecting the past and the future, but is also going to create a solid framework for growth and development in the region,” says Louis Becker, Partner and Design Principal at Henning Larsen.

The hotel is part of Frank Gehry’s masterplan set to transform Sønderborg’s harbor from industrial harbor to an active city neighborhood. Apart from 190 rooms the hotel also offers conference facilities with a capacity of 400 people and an appurtenant waterpark with spa and wellness facilities. The building will be completed in 2019.
