Bringing Scandinavian ethos to “The Springs” of Shanghai

With outdoor terraces on every floor and a green public space in the center of the development, we have created a livable, green habitat in Shanghai.

    • With ‘The Springs’, developed for Tishman-Speyer, our Hong Kong office is providing a people-oriented, sustainable and innovative workspace to the Yangpu district - one of the fastest growing neighborhoods and education hubs in Shanghai.

Developed around the concept of the Vale, the overall masterplan scheme positions the buildings around the periphery of the site forming an intimate space in the center of the development.

      A green habitat in Shanghai

This way, the massing of the buildings creates a public realm with a soothing microclimate that improves air quality and reduces noise pollution while it brings natural light into the space. A plethora of greenery and several passageways create a public ground floor that encourages natural pedestrian flow from all surrounding areas and enhances the local community.

“We wanted to create a protected environment in this city center that contributes to the potential for this development to become a new focus that generates and attracts public life in uptown Shanghai,” Design Director and Partner, Claude Bøjer Godefroy explains.

Wellbeing and health at the core

Inspired by Shan Shui, a traditional form of Chinese landscape painting, the terraces and balconies of the stepped buildings host lush gardens saturated with native vegetation. Outdoor terraces on every floor extend the ground-level terrace landscape upwards, supporting an immersive green atmosphere within the city.

As Claude Bøjer Godefroy asserts, “We understand sustainability in broad terms. It is important to offer people an environmental-friendly surrounding while at the same time developing a building that stages human interaction.”

Aimed at creating future-thinking workspaces for the creative industries, the three buildings provide wide product variety through multiple and flexible configurations. Generous communal spaces and shared facilities throughout the development enrich the community.

Construction began on 12th July 2018 and the project is expected to be completed in 2020. Designed with landscape architects SLA.
