Let’s break out of the monogamy

On this important day for gender equality, I share my hopes for creative industries: that we will take responsibility for the world’s challenges through inspiring partnerships with other businesses.

At the end of 2018, the World Bank made about $200bn available to fund action on climate change from 2021-25. Denmark-based shipping company Maersk, the largest in the industry, announced its own plans to cut its net carbon emissions to zero by 2050. And 50 major global businesses from the World Economic Forum representing $1.5 trillion in revenue signed an open letter calling for stronger action at COP24.

It is time for creative industries to take leadership and unfold our potential as economic uncertainty, climate change and growing urban density challenge cities across the globe. Creative industries have the ability to create something new that answers the challenges. But we cannot do it alone. Strong partnerships across sectors is what will transform these challenges into solutions.

That is why I really trust in the power of the UN Sustainability goal number 17: Partnerships.

Today, on March 8, together with 22 other female industry leaders, I am the host of an event where 150 women meet to create a business within the field of urban global life - 1 hour. All come from different backgrounds and industries, and the goal is to explore unknown potential in these partnerships. I am excited!

A new city every week

In 2050, 68% of the world population will live in cities. To meet this demand, we need to create a new city for 1.5 million people – each week – according to the UN. Obviously, this is a tremendous task. It calls for action and collaboration across sectors.

With our focus trained on human-impact and collaboration, I encourage architects to uphold these partnerships and take more leadership in engaging with other industries.

A partnership is a common ground. Not just joining forces on a specific project, but realizing we have the same goals, no matter what business. It is about collaborations based on visions, a shared agenda. About bringing people together, merge ideas, create value beyond the buildings. This won’t just be great news for the climate, the globe, and our common future, but also for our business.
