Construction has officially begun at Mission Rock, the mixed-use development located in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood. A public-private partnership between the San Francisco Giants, Tishman Speyer, and the Port of San Francisco, the 28 acre project will be home to Henning Larsen’s first tower in the United States.

In a ceremony held on June 23rd, Henning Larsen Partner Daniel Baumann joined San Francisco mayor London Breed, Tishman Speyer President and CEO Rob Speyer, Port of San Francisco Executive Director Elaine Forbes  and – in a showbiz flourish – Giants stadium announcer Renel Brooks-Moon on site to formally launch the project.

Henning Larsen’s contribution to the development is Building G, a 13 storey high rise that has already been fully leased by Visa as their new Global Headquarters. Inspired by the scale and and texture of San Francisco’s iconic, hilly urban landscape, the building features a ruggedly faceted façade accented by green terraces that ascend from the building’s base. Outdoor terraces wrap the fifth floor and crown the building’s peak, offering a peak into the Giant’s stadium across Mission bay.

The Mission Rock masterplan also includes work by Studio Gang, WORKac, MVRDV, and a large waterfront park by landscape architects SCAPE.

The Mission Rock development augments recent urban growth in Mission Bay, adding 8 acres of parks and green space, 1.4 million square feet of office space, and 200,000 square feet of retail and manufacturing space, and 1,200 residential units to the area. 40 percent of the residential units will be reserved for low- and moderate-income households.

Following the recent completion of the new Public Service Building, Mission Rock is due to be Henning Larsen’s third project completed in North America. Mission Rock is expected to open to the public in 2025.
