  • Over the next ten years the Metzgergrün residential quarter in Freiburg, is set to change significantly and develop into a contemporary settlement without losing its original character. The residential quarter will comprise around 500 residential units. The urban planning organizes apartments into six blocks that create neighborhoods of comfortable dimensions. Each block combines housing rows of three to four-stories as well as detached multi-unit dwellings with a green inner courtyard.

Metzgergrün residential quarters has rapidly gained popularity due to its high proportion of green open space. Tucked between two allotments for public gardening, the significance of the residential quarter as an ecological corridor will continue to play an important role in the future. A currently canalized watercourse will be daylighted and led through the center of the residential quarter. Biotopes will be created along the new stream, which can also be used to retain stormwater. Giving the neighborhood a new natural and green center with trees and seating for recreation and social cohesion.

The design interprets the original character of the settlement in a contemporary way and offers the current and future residents a lively quarter with a high quality of living. The sustainable traffic concept keeps the center of the settlement largely car-free. Parking is provided in three collective garages at the edges of the quarter. All streets in the neighborhood are assigned to public life and used as “shared spaces”.
