      Umeå School of Architecture Inaugurated

On 24 September, a new school of architecture was inaugurated in Sweden. The Umeå School of Architecture forms part of the Arts Campus at Umeå University, which will also comprise a new Art Museum and an Academy of Fine Arts.

    • The new School of Architecture at Umeå University has a unique location by the beach of Umeå River and close to the city centre. The school is the fourth of its kind in Sweden but the first one with an independent, artistic profile. Thus, the school has focus on sustainability and international relations.

”The intention has been to design an open, robust study environment where each student feels part of the creative study community. The open layout and informal meeting places create a light and laboratory-like atmosphere supporting idea development and creative work processes”, explains architect Per Ebbe Hansson, Henning Larsen Architects.

Since autumn 2009, the students have stayed in the old premises of the customs authorities in Umeå. In September, the students moved into the new facilities by Umeå River and now the official inauguration ceremony is held.

The inauguration ceremony featured speeches by Principal Peter Kjær (former principal of Aarhus School of Architecture), architect Per Ebbe Hansson from Henning Larsen Architects, architects Lennart Sjögren from White Architects and client representative Staffan Ling from Balticgruppen. The ceremony will also feature an exhibition of student works.
