Kiruna’s present city hall is a unique architectural creation from 1958; the original design competition drew proposals from noted architects such as Alvar Aalto and Artur von Schmalensee, the latter of whom won. There is now a need to replace and relocate the city hall, which, as one of the first buildings within Kiruna’s new city center, will be a landmark for the community. The building will constitute a new cultural and physical centre, yet maintain much of the current building’s functionalities. The new design is to be a sustainable structure, and will house the city’s art collection as well as performance space for music and theatre. Other finalists in the competition are HRTB Arkitekter, Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter, Jarmund/Vigsnaes and Wingårdhs Arkitektkontor.
