• New City Hall in Kiruna

A team consisting of Henning Larsen Architects, Tema Landskaps- arkitekter, UiWE Culture Design and the engineering company WSP are among five finalist teams in competition for the new city hall in Kiruna, in Northern Sweden. The finalists were selected based their previous project work and background, including client references and experience working with construction in cold climates.

    • Kiruna’s present city hall is a unique architectural creation from 1958; the original design competition drew proposals from noted architects such as Alvar Aalto and Artur von Schmalensee, the latter of whom won. There is now a need to replace and relocate the city hall, which, as one of the first buildings within Kiruna’s new city center, will be a landmark for the community. The building will constitute a new cultural and physical centre, yet maintain much of the current building’s functionalities. The new design is to be a sustainable structure, and will house the city’s art collection as well as performance space for music and theatre. Other finalists in the competition are HRTB Arkitekter, Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter, Jarmund/Vigsnaes and Wingårdhs Arkitektkontor.
