      Housing at Islands Brygge, Copenhagen

Henning Larsen has designed a new residential area at Islands Brygge in Copenhagen. The first 120 apartments are expected to be built within the next two years.

    • The apartments form the first part of a total of 55,000 m2 residential area called “Havnebryggen.” Henning Larsen Architects has developed a masterplan for the area and designed the first 120 units, which will be ready for occupancy in 2017.

The masterplan and the residential units build upon a vision of uniting the recreational qualities of Amager Fælled—an open green area nearby—and Copenhagen’s dynamic inner harbor, creating a unique new identity for the historically industrial area.

“This development is situated in a special place in Copenhagen. It has extraordinary contact to the harbor, and it is closely related to the natural landscape of Amager Fælled. The architecture combines these qualities and utilizes them to create a new, strong identity which engages with nature. We are proud to have been chosen for this task,” says Henning Larsen Architects CEO, Mette Kynne Frandsen.

The project has been designed with a focus on flexibility in each apartment; a two-way relation between building interiors and the outdoors; and, comfortable, welcoming outdoor spaces. Architect Eva Ravnborg explains the concept behind and qualities of the apartments in the video below (Danish only).

“Havnebryggen” is being realized in collaboration with PensionDanmark, NCC, Emcon, Sandbeck and Living Homes. In the coming years, between 5,000 and 6,000 apartments will be built on five plots in the Copenhagen harbor. Construction of the first buildings will start in June, and are expected to be completed in 2017.
