The residential building is the first component of the ‘City Centre Klaksvík’ masterplan to be realized, and has thereby become a symbol of Klaksvík’s great transformation. “It is of course very exciting for us to be part of the construction of the first building in our own masterplan for Klaksvík’s new town center,” says Ósbjørn Jacobsen, Architect at Henning Larsen Architects and head of Henning Larsen Architects’ office on the Faroe Islands.
The new 5,000 m2 building will reach three and four stories, with public functions facing the town square on the ground floor and residences with private terraces or balconies on the upper levels. To enrich the city life and strengthen ties between the apartments and their surroundings, the residential terraces and balconies all face south and west, towards the town square.
Klaksvík’s transformation will be achieved through the construction of new buildings, plazas, canals, and public green areas, all of which will be built in the coming years. This is expected to be done in time for occupancy of the first residential building in 2017.
Henning Larsen Architects won the ‘City Centre Klaksvík’ masterplan project in an open international competition in 2012, from among 154 international submissions.
Construction of the residential building is in collaboration with Sjálvsoganrstovnurin undir Kráarbrekku, Bústaðir, Kanjon, PBC and LBF.
