The vision behind the project is to create an innovative diabetes center with facilities for treatment of the growing number of persons with diabetes and for research and education. The patients will be offered treatments of the highest international standard, as well as the new research environment is expected to attract top researchers nationally as well as internationally. The center will be located next to Herlev Hospital in the Copenhagen Region.
The center is funded by the Capital Region of Denmark together with the Novo Nordisk Foundation, which has contributed with 2,8 billion DKK (380 mio. EUR), the largest single grant in the history of the foundation. The 18,000 m2 (194.000 ft2) diabetes center will have an annually treatment capacity of 13,000 patients and have 330 full-time employees and. It is expected to open in 2020.
Henning Larsen Architects participates in the competition as the leader of a team consisting of Norconsult, Orbicon, SLA and Via Trafik. The remaining teams prequalified are led by C.F. Møller, Cowi, Nickl & Partner and Aarhus Arkitekterne.
