Henning Larsen Opens Studio in New York

With over 1.5 million square feet in design and under construction throughout the US and Canada, Henning Larsen establishes a new office in New York City. Our aim is to set a new architectural agenda in North America through our knowledge-based Scandinavian design approach.

    • Building upon the momentum of an invited competition for the Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center (PACWTC) in 2014, the New York studio now opens with several significant projects underway throughout North America.

Henning Larsen recently won design competitions for major civic projects in Toronto and in Minneapolis. Designs are in progress for confidential projects including a STEM faculty at a major university. The Carl H. Lindner College of Business in the heart of the University of Cincinnati campus is under construction.

“So much is happening for us in the US and Canada; it’s really exciting. We’ve been fortunate to work with clients who have a genuine commitment to design excellence and interest in our expertise and design approach. This really influenced our decision to dedicate our efforts on the ground,” says Louis Becker, Partner and Design Principal.

Henning Larsen works in a collaborative process to tailor-make designs to the ambitions of our clients. In addition to considering the cultural and physical contexts, we put particular emphasis on designing places that inspire human interaction and community, and foster wellbeing – indoors and out.

      Knowledge-based design

“In North America, we have received very positive response to our knowledge-based design. We work strategically at the crossroads of architecture, engineering and technology integrating research-based knowledge into every stage of the design process. This demand for our holistic approach to sustainable architecture spans from high-performance energy design to social and economic qualities,” says Louis Becker.

The New York studio is Henning Larsen’s seventh global office, joining Copenhagen, Oslo, the Faroe Islands, Riyadh, Munich, and Hong Kong. Louis Becker will oversee the studio and share his time between Copenhagen and New York. Run by Managing Director Mike McElderry together with Partner Nina La Cour Sell, the office includes key employees who have relocated from the Copenhagen office as well as US Architects. The studio is further supported by a team of specialists coming out of Henning Larsen’s Copenhagen office.
