The First Award for the Belfast Waterside

Belfast Waterside wins its first award at the 2018 World Architecture News Awards. The 16-acre masterplan is set to revive Belfast and prolong the outdoor season.

    • The World Architecture News Awards has recognized our design for the Belfast Waterside for its goals to breathe new life into Belfast and prolong the comfortable outdoor season.

From Copenhagen, we know that harbors have an enormous potential to activate public life in a city. The new Belfast Waterside will take full advantage of the River Lagan. The masterplan will create the framework for people to feel part of a shared public life.

As part of the transformation, it was essential to ensure outdoor comfort in the area. Analyzing the thermal microclimate, we have applied an effective scale-gradient strategy to the project. Instead of winds being guided through the streets, the strategy of placing the lower buildings towards the waterfront guides winds over the buildings. Our studies show this approach will reduce wind speeds significantly, prolonging the comfortable outdoor season from 9 weeks up to 25 weeks.

This is the first award for the 16-acre masterplan. Belfast wins alongside Nordea Headquarters in the Commercial category and the Carl H. Lindner College of Business in the Future Projects: Education category.
