Henning Larsen’s Kiruna Town Hall was honored at the 2019 European Steel Design Awards ceremony, held on Tuesday in Brussels.

Held every two years by the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS), the juried awards seek to recognize innovating and outstanding use of steel in architecture. Kiruna Town Hall was selected as the winner by an international panel of engineers and architects, out of 28 projects initially submitted for consideration. The award honors the building’s architects, owners, engineers, general contractors, and steelwork contractors.

Opened in November 2018, the Kiruna Town Hall joins civic functionality with social appeal, offering a dual-function living room for the Swedish city of Kiruna as the entire town relocates three kilometers east.

“The structure of Kiruna supports civic and social activity. The outer volume contains office space for Kiruna Municipality, but the center serves as a social space to support a community on the move,” explains Henning Larsen Partner Louis Becker. “We’re honored to be recognized by the ECCS for our work on the project.”

ECCS represents the European Association of Steelwork Contractors, an organization consisting of steel producers, contractors, researchers, and academics. ECCS is a federation of 18 national associations of steelwork contractors.
