A Transformed Uppsala Town Hall is Inaugurated

Fifty-seven years after Uppsala Town Hall first opened, it is now finally fulfilling its original intention. Henning Larsen, in collaboration with SLA and Tyréns, is behind an extensive transformation of the town hall, totaling 25,000 m2, including 13,500 m2 new built. The transformed town hall, now in use, with its large glass-covered courtyard, is the new public gathering place in Uppsala.

    • With its transparent architecture, the new town hall in Uppsala engages with the citizens. The town hall invites the audience inside through a passageway that runs through the ground floor of the building. A courtyard covered with a large glass roof forms the heart of the town hall, and here are public services and programs located which include citizen service, café and restaurant, shops and exhibition facilities.

The project is a renovation and an extension to the existing town hall, which was only partially completed in accordance with the original drawings. Henning Larsen's design is based on Erik and Tore Ahlsen's 1957 competition proposal and completes with an L-shaped building the original intention with a closed block.

"A town hall is a physical manifestation of our democracy in the sense that it brings together our elected officials and officials and symbolizes the community. To reflect on this and at the same time build on the original vision of the town hall, we have designed a town hall where citizens are invited right into the heart of the town hall when they meet the municipality's politician, officials and other citizens," says Per Ebbe Hansson, Lead Design Architect at Henning Larsen.

The new Uppsala Town Hall promotes dialogue with citizens and unites the city's everyday life with the activities of the town hall.   The town hall is at the same time a functional workplace and a meeting place for city dwellers, officials and politicians. Past, present and future are combined in the extension, which fulfills the original architectural vision.

Centrally located in the covered courtyard, a sculptural building links the old and new sections of the town hall with walkways of different levels. The town hall and meeting and conference facilities are located here. The central building contributes to a modern working environment where knowledge sharing and problem solving across the organization are paramount. In addition to 1,650 flexible workplaces, a café with outdoor seating, a restaurant, shops, conference facilities and space for public and private exhibitions and events, the new town hall contains 1,650 flexible workplaces, a café with outdoor seating, a restaurant, shops, conference facilities and space for public and private exhibitions and events.
