Over the past twenty years, Jacob Kurek’s work with Henning Larsen has helped propel the firm to its present position on the global architecture scene. Jacob’s focus on site-specific and community-based urban solutions reveals a core commitment to transparent, democratic architecture.

Through the years, he has worked with a wide range of typologies, including urban planning, industrial reclamation, workspaces and educational and cultural institutions. Since 2009, Jacob has served as Partner in charge of international projects, and Henning Larsen is currently engaged in projects across 12 countries in Europe and the Middle East. Currently, he is leading the process of revitalizing the Imperial Shipyard in Gdansk, Poland, and transforming the waterfront in Belfast, Northern Ireland, as well as overseeing the completion of the new Queensæand University of Technology facility in Brisbane, Australia.

As a strategic thinker, Jacob has a strong focus on realizing the potential of a site and its context; developing new urban qualities that add life to and in between buildings while at the same time ensuring sustainable and viable solutions.

Jacob seeks to adapt Scandinavian design principles to reflect and enhance local culture and traditions. He spent five years as the head of Henning Larsen’s Riyadh office, contributing to the firm’s thirty-year history of developing architectural solutions in Middle Eastern cultures. While directing the Riyadh office, Jacob oversaw the fruition of the 415 acre King Abdullah Financial District masterplan. This new district adapted Henning Larsen’s research in sustainability and energy modeling to a desert climate, creating comfortable outdoor spaces in the Arabian heat.

Toward extending principles of Scandinavian design to broader audiences, Kurek has taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Architecture in Copenhagen, and in 2017 he was awarded the Latvian Architecture Award for his contributions as an international jury member. He is an experienced speaker and regularly lectures at conferences and universities, and continues to moderate professional forums on design and architecture.

Jacob has been a partner at Henning Larsen since 2009, and in 2018 he joined the company’s board of directors. Furthermore, he is a board member of the Danish Association of Architectural Firms.
