Sonja is Global Design Director of landscape. Her primary focus is on the regeneration and creation of vibrant urban spaces, and ecology restoration. She has led large international design teams to deliver projects that feature robust urban structures with careful attention to creating high performance public realms that balance nature and the built environment. Sonja has extensive experience spearheading design processes for Henning Larsen's largest and most complex masterplans around the world, from overall masterplanning of urban districts, to the design of intimate public spaces.
Sonja's work emphasizes biophilic design to maximize user well-being, while enhancing biodiversity of local plant and animal species. Nature, connectivity, social qualities, and amenity values form the foundation of Sonja's approach, which ensures that every project delivers comfortable and safe spaces for humans to interact, explore nature, and enjoy urban life.
Sonja was a driving force in the success of the Calabar ICC masterplan in Nigeria. The 4 million m2 cultural, residential, and commercial development extends the city up the hillside and introduces vital new rainwater management systems. She also headed the Kanalvej urban development in Copenhagen which merges Microsoft’s new Danish headquarters with the Danish Technical University (DTU), introducing diverse urban life with a mix of housing, businesses, cultural activities, and attractive open spaces. Sonja worked closely with Microsoft and DTU to translate their needs into an urban design project which integrates landscape, infrastructure and building.
