    • The Zollhallen Plaza exemplifies successful water sensitive design in an urban context. The plaza is a new counterpart for the historic customs hall which was restored in 2009. Formerly a railyard, the design plays on the sites history with all of the hardscape materials recycled from the railyard. Timeless and multifunctional benches are recalled break noses of rail tracks, and old rail tracks are inlaid into the paving. The recycled materials harmonize the plaza’s clean, modern design with the historic architecture of the customs hall.

      A bright grove of cherry trees provides the perfect amount of shade, while infiltration planters with perennials and ornamental grasses give an attractive softness. Indented plaza areas create a surface flood zone. No rainwater is fed to the sewer system, instead the ground water table is recharged.  Beautiful planters provide infiltration points, and subsurface gravel trenches with innovative in-built filters, reduce the hydraulic overload on the sewer system.
