  • Haltern am See is a recreational destination for the Ruhrgebiet, one of Germany’s most densely populated and industrial areas. Mill Bay sits at the intersection between the town and an outstanding nature conservation area. Through an onsite workshop competition, Haltern am See Council sought ways to increase tourism and create a vibrant new identity for the town. Inspired by the regions topography, the winning design’s rainwater management allows for 100% husbandry of a 10-year storm event, through water sensitive urban design.

Revealing the potential of Mill Bay, the island is divided in two with one side dedicated to water culture, characterized by terraces and lively playground, cafe, kiosk and boat harbor; the other side is a green island that opens to the natural wilderness, an idyll of peace and enchantment. The green island brings nature close to the city and acts as a barrier, protecting the adjacent restricted access site of special scientific interest.

Mill Bay connects people to water and the outstanding landscapes that the region offers. It is now a destination for day visitors and is the point of departure for those heading off further afield.
