The Salling Rooftop sits atop one of Aarhus’s most popular shopping destination, the Salling Department Store, on the city’s busiest pedestrian street. The rooftop brings the vibrancy of Strøget up to its rooftop, where visitors are met with panoramic views of the city, an outdoor restaurant, and abundant seating to enjoy the scenery. Within the first three month of its opening, the rooftop attracted over half a million visitors and has grown into a beloved destination for tourists and locals alike. The rooftop not only delivers an expanded experience for shoppers, but a new type or urban space above the city’s streets.
Like most urban rooftops, the one above Salling was not built with the intention of recreational use. What was originally a decision to simply expand the small café on the rooftop became a complete redesign of the space, complete with a terraced seating areas, pocket gardens, stage area, and a glass skywalk that looks down onto the city street below.
Our state-of-the-art roofgarden adds 1400 square meters to the already existing rooftop and providing a quiet oasis for immersion and cohesion surrounded by green vegetation in the open air.
The Roofgarden is being shaped by 6-meter-tall trees that literally grow into the sky, plants running down the building’s facade, and a lookout platform 30 meters above the city’s streetscape, creating a panoramic view over Denmark’s second-biggest city. Bridges on different levels make it possible for people to move between the roofgarden’s different facilities.
Bringing nature closer to people not only create spaces for people to gather, but also make for better air quality and reduce noise reverberation in the cityscapes. With the decreasing biodiversity in urbanized areas, city nature is becoming an important piece of the puzzle in creating a sustainable ecosystem.
The vast usage of vegetation in Salling Roofgarden creates a habitat for local plants and wildlife, contributing to the green transition that Aarhus is going through.
A year after the successful opening of Salling Rooftop Aarhus, a similar project was build for their department store in Aalborg. The 1400 square meter are divided on 3 different floors with a viewing ramp, seating areas, amphitheatre, café and, not least, a panoramic view of the entire Aalborg city and fjord.
Salling Aalborg is located very centrally in the city and welcomes a considerable number of customers on a daily basis. As an additional offer for the customers, the townspeople and tourists etc. it has been Sallings wish to create a new urban space in Aalborg, a meeting place and oasis where you can sit and reflect and enjoy the city.
