We have expanded our open-source carbon catalogs

By Emma Castelot

Unboxing Carbon - The Catalog offers architects and designers comprehensive insights into the carbon emissions of construction materials, allowing them to make more informed design choices. After extensive data collection and analysis, our sustainability and design teams have published a new catalog for interior materials along with a second edition focused on exterior construction materials - download both below.

The critical window for a serious and pivotal response to climate change is now. With the buildings and construction industry accounting for nearly 40% of global emissions, it is crucial that our carbon footprint becomes a driving force in our design choices.

Raising the bar of knowledge to make informed choices is essential for architects, a process that we have driven with Unboxing Carbon, a carbon literacy course focusing on the environmental impact of construction materials. Following the course, we published our findings into our first open-source catalog for exterior construction materials, Unboxing Carbon – The Catalog. Now, Unboxing Carbon - The Catalog has expanded to include two catalogs—one dedicated to interior materials and an updated edition for exterior materials.

These catalogs are our way of giving back to the industry - providing graphically appealing, easily readable, quality-controlled catalogs that professionals can use directly in their projects and in discussion with clients.

The catalogs provide architects and designers with a visually accessible way to assess Global Warming Potential (GWP) in product production phases, using data on embodied carbon from Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), and in a readily understandable unit for architects: m².

This new interior catalog includes insights for wall boards, system walls, interior cladding, tiles, countertops, and interior finishes. The updated edition of the exterior materials catalog features a wider range of materials, now including roofing, insulation and refreshed data points, reflecting the latest developments in material manufacturing and environmental policies.

Unboxing Carbon – The Catalog for interior materials is the product of internal collaborative efforts between our sustainability team led by Sille Foltinger, Sustainability and LCA Expert our and design team led by Sam Sandvig Hosman, Lead Graphic Designer.

“The data is sourced from Environmental Product Declarations, organized by category, and broken down to an easily understandable unit, per square meter. Our aim is to keep the information accessible—no complex digital tools, BIM, or EPD interpretation skills required—just straightforward, visual graphics for immediate use in carbon-conscious design decisions.” says Martha Lewis, Head of Materials, Henning Larsen.

Despite efforts to ensure accuracy in reproduction of data and hyperlinks, errors can slip through. If you find any, please let us know at carbon@henninglarsen.com
