Official Inauguration at the New Waterfront Campus in Aalborg

On Tuesday the 23rd, another campus building was inaugurated on Aalborg’s waterfront. The building will house the creative departments of Aalborg University and is therefore referred to as CREATE.

    • CREATE, which is part of the new Aalborg City Campus, aims to create coherence between the university’s different creative departments. Additionally, the purpose of the building is to become an attractive meeting place for the citizens of Aalborg. Therefore, the building is centered round a grand public atrium, which includes common facilities like exhibition areas, auditoriums, and a cantine.

An important part of the building is its large, south-facing courtyard with expansive glass panels, which lend a transparent expression of the building, and thereby create a visual connection between internal and external activities. The courtyard is designed to become an entirely new city space, where concerts, open-air cinemas, theatre and exhibitions can take place.

The chairman of the region of Northern Jutland gave a speech at the inauguration, and declared: ”Aalborg University and the students, in particular, have been given new and improved facilities in exciting surroundings. I have no doubt that the new building will create a strong foundation for creative development among the students. The city of Aalborg can be proud of the new campus.”

The inauguration also included speeches by Chancellor Michael Johansen; the mayor of Aalborg, Thomas Kastrup-Larsen; and, director of Henning Larsen Architects, Louis Becker.

Following the speeches, the new campus was officially opened when the ribbons of seven red balloons were cut by the partners of the project. The building is designed by Henning Larsen Architects in collaboration with A. Enggaard. Henning Larsen Architects has also designed the nearby new youth residences, which now figure as the neighbor building to the new campus and will provide housing for 240 students.
