      New City Hall in Middelfart

The Municipality of Middelfart on the Danish island Funen has chosen a project by the construction group 5E Byg as the winner of the competition on city centre development. The project is created in collaboration with Henning Larsen, Rambøll, and LIW Planning. It includes a new city hall, apartments, and shops.

    • At the announcement of the winning project, the committee stated; “it is a characteristic building that will strengthen the expression and attractiveness of the city” and the building  ”is a beautiful example of contemporary architecture of high quality”.  The Municipality of Middelfart will become the owner of a new city hall of almost 8,000 m2, while a private investor will be the owner of 3,000 m2 for shops, and a local consortium will own 6,000 m2 of apartments.

The project forms a new city centre in the old market town. The new architecture respects the local scale and adds new energy to the well-known waterfront of Middelfart. By strengthening the coherence of the city, a new and lively gathering point in Middelfart is created.

The new city hall is meant for everyone and will not merely function as a traditional city hall. It will become a generator for green development and growth. The building is visible both from land and sea. It has a floating shape that stretches out towards the city and the harbor.

The double-height foyer of the city hall includes the reception and a service centre for the citizens of Middelfart. A wide staircase, that invites people to interact, leads from the foyer to the conference centre of the building on the second floor. On this floor, the Council Hall is located with a magnificent view over the strait, Lillebælt, and the bridge over the strait

The building is designed to give the employees the best possibilities for knowledge sharing across the organization. The dynamic, inner atrium is big enough for all employees to see each other across floors and departments. Open staircases create a clear connection between the floors.

The project is sustainable and will be certified in accordance with the DGNB standard.

The construction of the new building is expected to begin as soon as February 2015 and will be completed in April 2017.
