New Research Will Create Better Learning Environments

Henning Larsen has initiated a new research project in collaboration with the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. The project aims to create better learning environments through the use of lighting design.

    • The new research project is being conducted by Dutch architect and lighting designer Imke Wies van Mil who has recently joined Henning Larsen Architects as a business Ph.D. student. She will examine which factors shape the quality of light and will investigate the interplay between people, surroundings and lighting in current lighting design.

The aim is to implement lighting in the early stages of architectural design. In this way, the use of light can enhance the creation of moods and atmosphere in future learning environments. Ms van Mil has particular experience within the field of artificial lighting, which will form a great contribution to the Sustainability Department of Henning Larsen Architects.

“At Henning Larsen Architects, we have done a lot of research concerning daylight and its importance for people and spaces. Now, the time has come to dig deeper into the field of artificial lighting. With this project, we want to question the way we think about lighting environments today by creating synergy between the use of daylight and artificial lighting,” says Signe Kongebro, Partner and Manager of the Sustainability Department at Henning Larsen Architects.

The research project is the fifth project hosted by Henning Larsen Architects and follows other research projects about daylight, energy design and micro climates. The Sustainablity Department is continiously engaged in research projects to ensure that our designs are always guided by the best and latest knowledge available.

Imke Wies van Mils’ project runs from December 2014 and will be supervised by Professor Olga Popovic Larsen of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and Signe Kongebro, Partner and Manager of the Sustainability Department at Henning Larsen Architects.
