Siemens HQ Wins an AIA International Region Design Award

Siemens’ global headquarters in Munich has won an AIA International Region Design Award in the Open International category. The award honors the building design as well as the sustainable solutions integrated in the building.

    • The building is one of Europe’s most sustainable buildings, meeting the highest standards for sustainability. It has been certified DGNB Platinum and LEED Platinum and was also shortlisted at this year’s MIPIM Awards in the ’Best Innovative Green Building’ category.

On October 7th it was announced winner at the AIA International Region Design Awards in the "Open International" category at the Joint Conference between the International Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Central Europe Chapter. The winners were presented at a gala dinner in Prague, Czech Republic.

“We’re thrilled to receive this award. The Siemens Global Headquarters truly pushes the boundaries of sustainability in architecture. Siemens is a world-leading technology company, and together we have created a showcase for sustainable building technology and architecture,” Partner and Design Principal, Louis Becker says.

      Giving back to Munich

The head office of Siemens, the world's largest producer of energy-efficient and resource-saving technology, is located in the heart of Munich. Being so central in the city, the building is designed to be an active contributor to the community and to give back to its context.

The ground floor of the building is open to the public, and this unique aspect of the building allows local residents and tourists to pass through an alley, which connects Munich’s historical city center with the city’s famous museum quarter. In that way, the building actively takes part in city life and intentionally gives something back to the city of Munich.

      Modern workspace

The building is also designed as a modern and inspiring work environment, where the 1,200 employees can share knowledge and work across departments. The office consists of an open working environment where employees can collaborate in larger groups, as well as quiet zones for tasks that require greater concentration, and a number of traverse walkways interconnect the office areas. Transparent architecture ensures visual contact with colleagues across courtyard rooms and floors and creates a sense of togetherness.

Project Manager at Henning Larsen and AIA member Jake Spruit received the award on behalf of the company in Prague on October 7.
