      Construction has Begun for New Research Institution

      We just celebrated the corner stone ceremony for the new Fraunhofer research building in one of Europe´s biggest science parks. It will be an inviting workspace with planted façades and photovoltaic elements on the roof.

    • Already, cranes mark the new plot for Fraunhofer Research Institution for Casting, Composite, and Processing Technology IGCV. The new building is well suited in Augsburg Innovationspark. With its size of 70 hectares, it currently emerges to one of Europe’s biggest science parks.

      We have been working with the client Fraunhofer to design an inspiring and sustainable workspace building, which opens up to the public and create awareness of the company’s research topics.

      A transparent spine

      The cubicle clad in dark grey bricks refers to the traditional usage of brick materials for industrial buildings. The interior, however, surprises with great openness, combining two inner courtyards with a transparent spine building.

      ‘The spine’ is the transparent heart of the building connecting in both vertical and horizontal directions and creating views between different functions as the test hall, laboratories, seminar rooms and office spaces.

      Visitors are invited into the foyer courtyard by the vast entrance, opening the whole ground floor with an overhang to one corner facing the street. By the open gesture, Fraunhofer offers views reaching as far as to laboratories, nurturing curiosity and the will to open a dialogue with the public.

      We take serious responsibility in creating a research building for Fraunhofer in Augsburg´s technology center. A building that provides the employees a healthy working environment and hereby meets the highest standards of sustainability. Roof greening improves the microclimate and the separate energy and multi-storey car park building is planned with a planted façade and photovoltaic elements on the roof. Combined with Henning Larsen´s expertise in the field of research and university buildings, Fraunhofer will get an innovative and sustainable institute, which marks the future way of research and work.

      Henning Larsen has gained profound experience in the planning of research and university buildings in Germany over the last fifty years like the Institute for Physics of Freie Universität Berlin, Universitätsbibliothek Rostock and Max-Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock to name a view. In 2017 the ZSW, Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research, in Stuttgart and Frankfurt School of Finance & Management were inaugurated. Taking this expertise into account, Fraunhofer IGCV will get an innovative and sustainable institute, which marks the future way of research and work.
