Three Ways Interior Design Can Prepare Your Business for the Future

To truly embrace the opportunities in the future job market, companies need to design their physical space in alignment with the development of the workforce. Here are three key things to remember when designing a workspace fit for the future.

    • The future job market is even more dynamic, agile and dependent on good ideas than the job market today. The future employee is transforming too, becoming more project-oriented, still more responsive to change and more perfidious. The physical space of companies need to work with this development, not against it, which is why being strategic about the interior design of your workspace is more important than ever.

      Create a sense of community

With the new generations becoming more entrepreneurial, passionate about self-employment and less loyal to employers, it is increasingly important for companies to be elaborate about their core values to attract like-minded employees who feel a resemblance with the company and a desire to tap into its community. Millennials will work for a vision, an employer brand they admire as consumers. Make sure your workspace reflects your values, make them visible through the choice of colors, materials, furniture, glass decorations, signage design, etc. Show off what you believe in.

Spend the square meters on knowledge sharing

When work is handled online through smartphones, employees are constantly on the go, and the workforce increasingly consists of freelancers, the personal meeting is a key factor in generating ideas. Make sure to design your workspace in favor of knowledge sharing and personal meetings from the beginning. In our own office space refurbishment, we have implemented flex seating for a large part of our colleagues to release square meters for shared spaces. Workshop facilities, large collaboration zones, and numerous informal meeting places will allow us to work together in new ways and meet across teams. Make sure to design a working environment where innovation can thrive and knowledge sharing has good growth conditions. The width of the staircase steps decides how easy it is to talk to each other while walking them. Everything counts.

      Design in favor of workflows

Make sure to design a workspace that makes your specific employees thrive. Be cautious of what they need to do their best, and then give it to them. Some might need tranquility, others an urban environment or shared spaces. Learn their routines, their workflows, their preferred environment and implement it in the design from the earliest stages. Millennials are more focused on living, not just working, and the workspace needs to support that. Perhaps your company will experience more productivity if it has an integrated breakfast café, laundry hall, a yoga hall, daycare, a swimming pool, or a storage room in the basement for delivery of packages?

To truly embrace the opportunities in the future job market, companies need to design their physical space in alignment with the development of the workforce.
