Public School Contributes to a More Sustainable Future

The School in Motion is recognized for promoting physical activity in a new book, ‘An Architecture Guide to the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals’ launched today.

    • Today ‘An Architecture Guide to the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals’ launched. The architecture guide was created in collaboration between the Institute of Architecture and Technology at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation, the Danish Association of Architects and the UIA Commission on the UN Sustainable Development.

Each chapter of the book presents one of the 17 goals providing examples of buildings and urban solutions that illustrate how architecture can contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. The guide features Frederiksbjerg School for promoting physical activity in line with Goal no. 4: Quality Education. Physical exercise improves children’s learning ability and research has proven that exercise after class benefits long-term memory. At Frederiksbjerg School there are over 100 ways to move through the school during the day. The design not only allows for physical exercise, it actively promotes it. The school is one of the first to meet the requirements of the National Danish Reform of Public Schools implemented in 2014.

The book presents the goals as they relate to architecture to spark conversation on how the built environment can contribute to a more sustainable future.

Henning Larsen is a strong supporter of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and has been members of the UN Global Compact since 2008. The school is designed in close collaboration with GPP Architects.
