    We're Shortlisted for Tropicana Field

Our shortlisted masterplan proposal envisions a connected, human-scaled, and green mixed-use development for St. Petersburg, Florida.

  • Henning Larsen is thrilled to have led the design effort for one of seven development teams responding to the City of St. Petersburg’s request for proposals to reimagine the future of Tropicana Field. Our vision, the result of the collaboration between Sugar Hill Partners teamtransforms the site’s 86 acres from surface parking and the Rays existing stadium into a vibrant urban hub. A mix of multi-family housing, commercial office, retail, a convention center, hotels, a tech campus, and a robust network of open green spaces strive to reconnect the people of St. Petersburg to this site at the heart of their city.

A successful urban realm is about supporting human interaction and equity,” says Michael Sørensen, Partner and Design Director of Henning Larsen’s New York office. Anchored within an area of the city that once held a thriving African-American community that was torn apart by Tropicana Field, this new district holds the potential to be a world class inspirational neighborhood, with emphasis on the balance between working, living and playing environments, stitching the fabric of the city, its green spaces, and its communities together again.

Our vision is built from the values and aspirations shared by people of St. Petersburg, and framed in four urban strategies that guide the form of the project:

    1. Reconnect, Rebuild, and Remember
    2. Extend a Human-Scaled Downtown
    3. Connect Through Nature
    4. Create a New Civic Stage

“When you see these submissions, I think you’ll quickly realize that the future has never been brighter,” noted Mayor Rick Kriseman at a press conference announcing the received proposals. Submissions include two masterplan visions – one with a stadium and one without. A month-long review process by a committee of city officials will result in a shortlist, followed by the selection of a winner later in 2021.
