Canberra Theatre Centre
Designing a space to enable cultural life on a scale that hasn’t previously been possible in Australia’s capital, Canberra Theatre Centre (CTC) is imagined as a vibrant, multi-event, all-inclusive space that will be the anchor project for the future of Canberra’s Civic and Cultural District.
Opened originally in 1965 as Australia’s first major government-funded performing arts center, CTC today is unable to compete with the facilities found in neighboring cities. As a result, the city cannot host the top-tier events and productions it would like.
Created in consultation with First Nations peoples, and in collaboration with Architectus and Arup, our design will transform and expand the existing space into a new home for performing arts in Canberra. A home that we envision as both a national landmark and an international destination for artists and audiences alike.
Referencing the formal landmarks of Canberra, the project design integrates computational design to develop interior concert halls as well as exterior façade cladding that will provide visitors with a sense of newness, balanced with familiarity.
“Approaching the design with great care and consideration, the project honors the history and beauty of the land, creating a revitalized cultural hub that celebrates the community, its diverse heritage and artistic expression, where people come together to share in the power of performance and storytelling,” says Henning Larsen Partner and Design Director, Viggo Haremst.
“The renewed and expanded venues will attract events and performances that currently bypass Canberra because our current facilities are too small. Our city will be able to host the top-tier productions we currently miss, including contemporary music, comedy, circus, musicals, ballet and opera. This investment will support our economy, particularly the tourism, hospitality and accommodation sectors.”

An inclusive approach
The cornerstone of what is planned to become an internationally recognized cultural precinct with impeccable design credentials, the project aims to serve as a new community meeting place for Canberrans, and a home for artists from across the globe.
The heart of the design envisions a space where artistic expression intertwines with the spirit of community, fostering a haven of creativity and togetherness. Along with the theatre, the design includes community spaces that will help foster an inclusive future for Canberra’s Civic and Cultural district.
